POSSESSED POSSESSIONS - an art project

Possessed Possessions features objects manipulated and transformed collaboratively by a group of artists, Jesses Leroy-Smith, Richard Ballinger, Chris Priest, Sam Bassett, and Delpha Hudson. Part of the Object Project, Possessed Possessions presents the objects we own (‘possessions’ – with the implication there are special properties attached to these objects), alchemically changed by a variety of transmutative processes, and combinations.

The repetition of ‘possess’ is ironic as there in fact no ownership of these objects, as yet. The definition of ‘possession’, ‘spurred or moved by a strong feeling, madness, or a supernatural power’, could be construed as describing either the artists, or indeed the objects themselves. The supernatural features in these objects as they are sometimes magically transformed into totems, puzzles, amulets, effigies, talisman, icons, stories……

As well as questioning consumerism and the secular role of objects in contemporary life, the project also explores alternative models of creativity and multiple authorship. The collaborative process is documented here, allowing audiences to comment, and perhaps even become part of the process.

Audiences will also be invited to become part of a final performance in which the possessions are given a final resting place.The process will also include a set of journals, and posters made in collaboration by the artists, which will be on display.
